Phoenix Auctioneering Academy: Do You Have What It Takes to Be an Auctioneer? (Part 1 of 2)

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

If you would like to become an auctioneer, you should consider attending a Phoenix auctioneering academy.  Auctioneers come in all shapes and sizes depending on the type of auction.  You can auction art, livestock, seized property, real estate, antiques, coins, and the list goes on.  Each type of auction requires specific expertise of what’s being sold, how the auction is conducted and the needs of both the buyers and sellers.

Auctioneering Skills and Qualities

To excel in the auctioneering field, auctioneers must like speaking in front of large crowds.  They must have a knack for being animated and entertaining groups of people.  The most common trait of the auctioneer is the fast talking “chant.”

You not only need to speak fast without missing a beat, but you have to speak clearly and with a distinct rhythm so you’re understood.  You can acquire chanting skills by attending a Phoenix auctioneering academy.

Most people consider the fast-talking chant at live auctions as the bulk of auctioneering responsibilities.  In reality, this part of auctioneering is a very small percentage of the total job.  The vast majority of auctioneering work involves marketing and auction preparation work.

Strong marketing skills are critical for auctioneers.  You’ll be dealing with buying and selling, so a marketing background will help.  You need to know how to target and attract the right buyers.  To do this well, auctioneering professionals have a solid understanding of both buyer and seller behavior.

Some auctioneering skills, like public speaking and clear, fast talking may come naturally to certain people.  But most people will learn how to acquire and use the necessary skills by attending a Phoenix auctioneering academy.

Finally, the most successful salespeople have integrity and become trusted advisors for buyers.  Auctioneers need to be trusted in the same way.  Your level of accomplishment as an auctioneer will depend on the trust you earn from both buyers and sellers.

In part two of this series we will see what it takes to be an auctioneer.
