What Can a Person Get at a Surplus Auction?

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

surplus auctionA surplus auction is where people go to buy or sell items that were purchased in surplus, but not sold. Purchasing in surplus is very common in many industries because it saves the company money and allows them to make a greater profit. There are many stores that sell military equipment, clothing and camping gear in surplus. Selling at a surplus auction can be very beneficial because it allows you to get rid of excess goods and at least break even if not make a profit. Buying at a surplus auction is also beneficial because it allows you to buy items at extremely low rates.

There are many different types of surplus auction

Government surplus Government surplus consists of items from the military, police and other government agencies. You can find many different things at a government surplus auction including vehicles, jewelry, property, collectables, household items, and weapons. These items are most often confiscated items, items used as evidence in a case that is now closed, items left behind by people or items that the agency does not need anymore.

Auto surplus Whether you are looking for a useful vehicle for yourself or family or you are looking a collector car or fixer upper, an auto surplus auction is an ideal place to find what you are looking for. You can find vehicles at many different types of auctions, but at an auto auction there is nothing but. You can find a variety of different vehicles from dealers and private owners without having to worry about any hidden issues or a salvaged title. All of the vehicles are inspected and come with a detailed description of all the car’s attributes both good and bad. Auction Systems does not allow the sale of vehicles with salvaged titles.

Industrial surplus An industrial surplus auction can be a great place to find building materials and heavy machinery. This is great for independent contractors, homeowners who are looking to do their own remodeling and construction companies who are looking for good deals on great products. Like all of our auctions you will get a detailed description of all items and be able to view them before the auction takes place.

A surplus auction is a great place to find a variety of different items at great prices. Auction Systems takes pride in providing all sellers and buyers with great service and making the auction process exciting and beneficial for all parties.

Public Auctions: The Different Types of Auctions (Part 2 of 2)

Monday, February 20th, 2012

This is the final part in a two part series on public auctions. To read part one, click here.

There are many different types of public auctions. The items at public auctions vary from each auction and although some auctions will have a wide array of items up for bid, some auctions are specific to the type of items that are up for bid. Public auctions are also known as government auctions and are held to sell property which is owned by the government or the properties which have been sold under the court law’s authority.

Public auctions are not limited to government-owned items. Public auctions can also include:

  • Surplus jewelry
  • Fiduciary trusts
  • Bank forced liquidations
  • School district equipment
  • City surplus equipment
  • Commercial restaurant equipment
  • US and foreign coin and currency
  • Watercraft auctions
  • Police auctions

Auctions that are conducted locally are known as local public auctions. Local auctions don’t have the involvement of any government authority and do not have to follow any government rules or auction guidelines. Local auctions are conducted according to the rules set by the auction company that is hosting the auction.

There is no telling what you can come across at a public auction. From pieces of property, houses, pontoon boats, firearms, household items, antiques, computers and electronics, tools and furniture, you can find it all at a public auction. If you are considering attending a public auction, choose an auction that you think will have the type of items you are interested in bidding on. Many public options allow you to preview the items before the auction so you can know exactly what is available and what condition the items are in.

The world of public auctions is quite diverse and exciting. You never know what you can come across and what sort of bargain you can find at a public auction. Since there are always new items being liquidated or confiscated by the government, there is always a new bargain to be found at public auctions!

Tempe Auction: The Importance of Attracting New Buyers (Part 1 of 2)

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

To bring a fair market price for a seller, a Tempe auction must attract enough buyers to promote profitable bidding.  It’s great to have regular buyers who show up like clockwork at auction events.  But, you want to be able to also see a lot of new faces.

A Tempe auction must find the right balance of making money for the seller and auction house, but still providing attractive deals for the buyers.  Sometimes that’s a tough feat to accomplish, but a necessary one for successful results.

At a basic level, any Tempe auction must have at least two interested bidders for every item.  This minimum bidding activity will help bring the fair market price for the item being sold.  When only one bidder bids on an item, it typically sells for a price well below market.  This is wonderful for the single bidder, but not so great for the seller and auction house.

The problem with items selling too low on a regular basis is the negative effect it has on attracting and maintaining sellers.  If sellers believe they won’t get a fair price by selling their merchandise at a Tempe auction, they’ll look for another sales channel.

You can find countless stories about the super, unbelievable deals buyers have snapped up.  A car bought for $100 or a diamond ring for $50 helps promote the “dirt-cheap” mentality of auction purchases.  However, if a seller has a diamond ring that’s worth $1,000, they don’t want to take a chance that it might sell for $50!

So, the answer to this dilemma is attracting more buyers so bids for most items can be within market value. With a regular base of shoppers attending Tempe auctions, more sellers will be apt to participate.

Stay tuned for part two of this series. In the mean time, for more information about Tempe auctions, contact Auction Systems today.

Tempe Auction: The 6 “P’s” of Excellent Event Planning

Monday, December 6th, 2010

As president-elect of my state auctioneer association, I recently planned and hosted our annual Tempe auction convention.   Planning a convention is very similar to planning a successful Tempe auction.  You must anticipate, prepare and execute a plan with good timing and precision.  In the army the motto of commanding officers says, “Prior proper planning prevents poor performance.”  These are the six “P’s” of groundwork for a great event.

In preparing my state’s Tempe auction convention I learned many great lessons and many of you are involved in conventions and educational opportunities for your associations.  Hopefully some of the “P’s” can assist you in your next Tempe auction event.

First, choose the location for the event.  This is so vital because a hotel that is too small can be a deterrent for the success of the next event.  Make sure that classrooms for seminars during the convention are large enough to accommodate the attendees.  Proper student seating including tables is expected in a learning environment.  Have good sound amplification for the instructor as well as all instructor props such as a computer projector, screen and white board.

Prepare your instructors or speakers for the Tempe auction event.  This is easy to do by sending a pre-event questionnaire to the speaker in which you find out their presentation needs as well as the accommodations they will be requiring for their stay at the event.  Also inform the speaker of the amount of attendees and the current level of development for each attendee, i.e. 25% first year in business, 40% in business less than five years, 35% in business more than five years.  This will allow the instructor to be prepared for their audience and give a better educational opportunity for the association.

Planning for the Tempe auction contest is often coordinated by the past Tempe auction champion.  This certainly relieves some pressure from the person planning the convention, however a list of expectations and timelines is important information to place in their hands.  Once again make sure there is enough room for the contest.  Put contest rules and judging criteria in the hands of the judges prior to the contest so they are prepared.  Know the number of contestants that will be in the final round of the contest and have a second Tempe auction committee person double check the number prior to announcing winners.  Additionally be prepared for the time between the announcement of the finalist and the end of the preliminary round.  If it is going to take a half-hour explain that to your crowd.  As with any event people will patiently wait if they are informed as to the planning of the event.

If you are going to have vendors participate in your Tempe auction convention, provide them an ample amount of space where they are visible to your convention attendees.  Remember both attendees and vendors want to find each other.  Don’t hide them in a far off room or worse yet – split your vendors up from each other where attendees are hunting to find a practical business solution.   Vendors are a great addition to any convention and improve convention attendance.

Most importantly, remember that Tempe auction association members are your customers.  If they don’t enjoy your convention and have a rewarding time both socially and educationally — they will return.  Auctioneers are masters at putting on a great show – make sure your convention belongs in the running for best of show.

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Do you have valuables that you wish to sell at live Arizona auctions? Do you want to want to get the highest dollar as well as the quickest cash settlement for the items you wish to sell at live Arizona auctions? This article will discuss selling items at live Arizona auctions as well as the benefits that an auction house can provide sellers.

Selling at Auction

The quickest way to secure capital from unproductive assets is by selling at live Arizona auctions. And the surest way to realize the highest cash return is to call upon the services of an auction house. These firms have produced millions of dollars for sellers in the history of their operation. With statistics such as these, it’s no wonder that auction and appraisal firm conduct so many live Arizona auctions a year, selling virtually every type of industrial, commercial and personal asset.

Types of Auctions

Most auction houses offer a variety of auctions to buyers and sellers. The most common types of auction are live Arizona auctions, Simulcast Auctions, Internet only Auctions and Private Auctions. Live Arizona Auctions allow assets to be liquidated on location at your business or home; or the assets can be sold along with the merchandise of other consigners at the auction house’s warehouse. Simulcast Auction combines the live auction method along with the Internet. Internet Auctions are typically used as a way to sell special collections and small antiques that only appeal to a very selective buyer base. Private Auction is used in disposition of personal assets from an estate where legacy transfers were omitted.

Superior Marketing That Attracts Buyers When Selling at Live Arizona Auctions

Regardless of the method used for your auction, auction houses are a “market-maker” and they understand that a successful auction begins with successful marketing and advertising. Only by attracting the most qualified buyers will spirited and competitive bidding occur. So auction houses focus a major effort on reaching the right audience effectively. Through years of auctions and appraisals, they’ve learned who and where the buyers are, as well as how to reach them. Using direct mail, trade journals, newspaper advertising, Internet message boards, email and broadcast fax; Auction houses assure the best possible buyer turnout. Choose an auction house with a reputation for fair auctions because they help draw more qualified buyers, as does their expert handling of timing, location, merchandising and other variables that can affect attendance and results.

Effective Salesmanship for Top Dollar Results When Selling at Live Arizona Auctions

High quality auction house’s auctioneers not only know value – they also understand salesmanship. Each is a proven master of “applied crowd psychology” and is able to maximize our seller’s return on assets. During the sale itself, the auction house’s staff keeps the live Arizona auctions moving, interesting and organized. Computerized accounting and invoices for each buyer are generated as the sale progresses, and cassette tapes record the auction event. The outcome is an auction in which everyone from seller to buyer receives a fair and equitable deal.
